Bruno Guimaraes set for Newcastle United talks after latest - expert

Bruno Guimaraes may be set for talks with Eddie Howe after his latest Newcastle United comments.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s latest comments.

Guimaraes can play in numerous positions across the midfield though this season he has been played in a deeper role by Eddie Howe.

Speaking to the Daily Mail on 20 September, Guimaraes admitted, “I prefer to play the ‘number eight’. The ‘number six’ I can help the team to move forward with the ball.”

The former Lyon man thrived as a more attacking player during the second half of the 2021-22 season, scoring five goals as Newcastle avoided relegation.

“You don’t really want to be discussing these things in the newspapers,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“The thing is, he is playing in a team. Sometimes it might be a case of the manager thinking that if he doesn’t say he is good enough for one position then he might be played in another.

“That can lead to the player not playing and it can cause a depression. I think Guimaraes has to knuckle down and do what the manager wants him to do.

“Howe could tell him that there will be a time when we will unleash you, he has to be a manager here and get in his head.

“It’s not for me to tell Eddie what to do but I think he will have a chat with him when he sees that he has come out publicly.”
