After brutal Shearer put-down, Poch delivers verdict on Tottenham player display

Mauricio Pochettino has commended Vincent Janssen for his energetic cameo in Tottenham’s 2-0 Premier League win over Southampton.
The Dutch striker was panned as inadequate by TV pundit Alan Shearer in the wake of Spurs’ triumph at White Hart Lane.
With Harry Kane absent for at least a month with ankle ligament damage, Pochettino opted to name attacking midfielder Heung-Min Son as the spearhead of the attack at the weekend.
The south Korean did not get on the scoresheet but linked up well with goalscorers Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli as Spurs strengthened their grip on second in the Premier League table.
Janssen had to make do with another late cameo appearance off the bench as he continues to struggle for game time.

But manager Pochettino was delighted with the enthusiasm of Janssen, who needed a “wake-up call” earlier in the season, on his 20th top-flight appearance for the club.
“It was good,” Pochettino said of Janssen’s subsitute appearance, as quoted by the Evening Standard. “He will have the possibility to play more and be more involved.
“I think he showed great energy when he was on the pitch.”
However, Premier League record scorer Shearer claimed at the weekend that £18million striker Janssen is not of a high enough calibre to lead the Spurs front line.
“Without Kane, Tottenham can turn to either Vincent Janssen or Son Heung-min to lead their attack,” Shearer told the BBC Sport website. “I don’t think Janssen is good enough, and they look a better team with Son leading the line.”
Holland international Janssen has struggled to replicate his prolific scoring for AZ Alkmaar at Tottenham.
The 22-year-old has managed just five goals this season for the Londoners, with the first four coming from the penalty spot and has completed 90 minutes in just four of his 31 appearances across all competitions.
