Mabbutt discusses Tottenham title fight, identifies missing ingredient

Gary Mabbutt believes Tottenham must win a trophy if they want to reach the next level.
Spurs suffered a huge blow to their chances of leapfrogging Premier League leaders Chelsea on Friday night, as they lost 1-0 to London rivals West Ham at the London Stadium.
Speaking to talkSPORT, former Tottenham star Mabbutt claims his former side need to finally win a piece of silverware, after falling at the final hurdle in the last two Premier League seasons.
However Mabbutt, who played for the north London giants for 16 years between 1982 and 1998, believes Spurs are better than they have been for a large part of their history as a football club.
“When you’re putting a team together – you have to build,” Mabbutt said.

“But you have to get a trophy. We’re getting there but just missing out on the final hurdle – and we have to get ourselves over that final fence and over the finishing line.
“Both on and off the field – Tottenham are in the best position they’ve been in for a long, long time.”
Manuel Lanzini broke Spurs fans’ hearts midway through the second half on Friday night, as the Argentinian playmaker smashed home a loose ball from close range to earn a 1-0 victory.
It sees Spurs remain four points behind Antonio Conte’s Chelsea, but the Blues now have the chance to go seven points clear at the top as they face Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
With Spurs now likely to have missed out the Premier League trophy, it will mean Pochettino’s side has missed out on a second successive title after falling to Leicester last season.
