Burnley face ‘worrying’ times after Scott Parker exit – ‘It’s not a happy place behind the scenes’
Burnley could be facing financial concerns to compound their miserable season in the Premier League.
That is according to ex-Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, after the Clarets parted ways with manager Scott Parker.
Parker left the club with just four matches of their Premier League season remaining, and with relegation back to the Championship already confirmed.
It was a tough season for the Clarets under Parker, who have won just four league games all season, and were knocked out of the FA Cup by League One Mansfield.
Mike Jackson is taking temporary charge of the team until the end of the season whilst Burnley sound out candidates to become their next permanent boss.
Burnley need to find new manager ‘as soon as they can’
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states that he is concerned about the debt at Burnley, but that the club should be able to rebuild in the Championship.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness said he was not surprised to see Parker leave the club so close to the end of the season.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Once Burnley had gone down, that was it, and it was time to part ways.
“It’s also better to get somebody in as soon as they can, give them a chance to look at the squad, hopefully, before the season ends, and we’ll see who they try to appoint.
“I’m afraid it was not happy behind the scenes at Burnley. They’ve also got some very interesting numbers in their accounts coming out that aren’t great in terms of the debt that’s being put on there by the present owners. So, Burnley’s not exactly the happiest ship right now.
“Nevertheless, the yo-yo effect is probably one of the most profitable ways for clubs between the Championship and the Premier League to handle it. So they’ve got another chance to try and rebuild again with parachute payments as well.
“But as I say, that debt is worrying me slightly. They’ve got to come back, and they seem to be able to do that. So we’ll see who gets given that hot seat.”
Steven Gerrard lines up Burnley job
Sources have told Football Insider, that Steven Gerrard is a leading candidate to replace Parker at Burnley.
Gerrard was most recently manager of Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, where he left his role in January 2025, following experience at Rangers and Aston Villa.
The 45-year-old led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021 for the first time in 10 years, but his time at Aston Villa was short-lived amid mixed results on the pitch.
Hoping to emulate the success of Frank Lampard at Coventry, Gerrard has no previous pedigree in the Championship and could be a risk for Burnley.
