Burnley next manager: Steven Gerrard hopes to replicate Frank Lampard’s Coventry success
Burnley are considering Steven Gerrard as a leading candidate to replace Scott Parker after his departure from Turf Moor, sources have told Football Insider.
Parker left the club by mutual consent earlier this week following the club’s relegation from the Premier League, and a number of replacements are now being considered.
The Liverpool legend has emerged as a top target for the position as he eyes a return to management in England, just months after turning down a return to Rangers.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Gerrard could be open to managing in the Championship with Burnley.
The boss could replicate the success of his former midfield partner Frank Lampard, who has reignited his career in the second tier, leading Coventry to promotion.
Could Steven Gerrard land the Burnley job?
Football Insider reported on 29 April that Gerrard is the favourite to replace Parker at Burnley, as one former England midfielder could be replaced by another.
He has long been linked with a return to the dugout since leaving his position at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia in 2025, but has been waiting for the right opportunity.
| Steven Gerrard Record | Al-Ettifaq | Aston Villa | Rangers |
| Games | 55 | 40 | 192 |
| Wins | 19 | 13 | 124 |
| Draws | 16 | 8 | 41 |
| Losses | 20 | 19 | 27 |
Sources say he could opt to reignite his managerial career in the Championship after seeing the success Lampard has enjoyed in the second tier.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “It does seem that Steven Gerrard is keen to return to the dugout sooner rather than later.
“He would be open to the possibility of a move to a Championship club, obviously there’s been links with Burnley who will be in the Championship next season.
“Obviously Scott Parker has now left Burnley as well, and the path has been cleared for Gerrard to return to management in England.
“Probably Gerrard himself has seen what his old England teammate, Frank Lampard, has done at Coventry, leading them to Premier League promotion.
“He has rebuilt his managerial career, so maybe Gerrard is thinking he could follow a similar path, make a move to the Championship and take over a club where he could maybe lead them to Premier League.”
What is next for Frank Lampard at Coventry?
Amid high praise for Lampard’s success at Coventry, his side’s performances have not gone unnoticed by other clubs looking to appoint their next manager.
A number of Premier League sides have considered poaching the manager away from the CBS Arena despite them having earned promotion to the top flight.

Football Insider revealed on 20 April that Coventry are determined to keep Lampard and are planning for a busy transfer window to convince him to stay.
The boss, meanwhile, has played down suggestions about a potential departure but appeared not to rule it out amid suggestions he could land the Chelsea job.
Crystal Palace are also believed to be among his admirers, but a move to Selhurst Park is considered unlikely, with Coventry likely to keep hold of their man.
