Sources: Burnley in advanced talks to appoint Nicky Hayen
Burnley are advancing in talks to name Genk boss Nicky Hayen as their next permanent manager, sources have told Football Insider.
Hayen is highly-regarded in Belgium after an impressive spell at Club Brugge, where he led his side to win the Pro League following his appointment as caretaker manager.
Since arriving at Genk in December 2025, the 45-year-old has won 13, drawn eight and lost seven of his 28 matches in charge, as his side finished seventh in the table.
Burnley's search for a new manager began following Scott Parker's dismissal after their relegation from the Premier League in June.
A number of options have been considered for the position, but they are now closing in on Hayen, who has been identified as their top target to take over at Turf Moor.
His appointment will require the club pay a compensation fee, but it is expected to be affordable, with Burnley now closing in on an agreement.
Why are Burnley targeting Nicky Hayen?
Burnley are putting plans in place for another season in the Championship following their relegation from the top flight last time out, as they hope to bounce back up.
The appointment of their next manager is seen as being crucial to those plans, and they are determined to get the decision right.
Hayen is highly regarded in Belgian football, particularly for his work with Club Brugge, but has a wealth of experience in managerial roles across European football.
He is typically keen to work with younger players, having taken a job at Brugge's Under-23 team Club NXT after deciding to leave Welsh side Haverfordwest County after a successful spell.
He will now be offered the opportunity to return to British football, as Burnley close in on an agreement, with the board strong admirers of his work in Belgium.
Last time Burnley turned to the Belgian Pro League to appoint their next manager, Vincent Kompany arrived at Turf Moor, and led his side to the Championship title.
Who else was on Burnley's managerial shortlist?
Despite now closing in on a deal for Hayen, Burnley have considered a number of different managers as options to become the next permanent boss at Turf Moor.
Craig Bellamy came close to landing the job before a late twist saw talks fall through, while former Wolves boss Rob Edwards is believed to have turned down the opportunity.
Meanwhile, Football Insider exclusively revealed on 29 June that Burnley considered approaching former Scotland boss Steve Clarke following their exit from the World Cup.
Sources understand that Burnley planned to interview Clarke, 62, after he stepped down as Scotland manager following their 2026 World Cup exit.
The Clarets have been stepping up their effors to appoint a permanent successor to Parker, and are now closing in on their man, despite the number of options considered.
