Callum McGregor facing Celtic axe after what McAvennie has spotted

Frank McAvennie expects Ange Postecoglou to make big changes to the Celtic team to face St Mirren on Sunday (18 September) including resting Callum McGregor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said players like Alexandro Bernabei and Giorgios Giakoumakis will come in to the starting XI and insisted he would love to see Yosuke Ideguchi return from injury.

McGregor started the game against Shaktar Donetsk on Wednesday night (14 September).

He played the full 90 minutes of 1-1 draw in the Champions League.

Giakoumakis was subbed on in place of Kyogo in the second half and Bernabei was an unused substitute.

Ideguchi suffered a knock in pre-season and has yet to feature for Postecoglou’s side this season.

The 26-year-old was left out of the Green and Whites’ 25-man Champions League squad.

The Celts face St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday after a week off from league fixtures.

When asked if he expects Postecoglou to make big changes for the league match, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I think he will.

The beauty of it is that the players coming in now are like for like. It’s a wonderful thing.

“I want to see Idgeuchi on the pitch again but he keeps getting injured. When he gets fit it’s the kind of game he’ll play in. I think [Anthony] Ralston will come in. I think Bernabei will come in at left-back. But it’s like for like. It’s not going to change the style of play, it’s not going to change anything because the manager has two players for each position. It’s a great situation to have.

It will be good to give McGregor a rest. He wants to play every game so it would be good to give him a week break. The manager will gauge that. I think Giakoumakis will play up front. It’s going to be a real good team going up against St Mirren.
