Campbell: Arsenal will hand Lacazette new contract on one condition
Arsenal will offer Alexandre Lacazette a new contract in the summer if they fail to attract their top targets, according to Kevin Campbell.
The former Gunners and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has applauded Mikel Arteta’s “smart management” of Lacazette’s situation after he deferred a decision on the 29-year-old’s future until the end of the season.
Lacazette has just 18 months left on the five-year contract he signed upon his arrival from Lyon in 2017.
As quoted by the Mirror, Arteta revealed talks with the striker’s representatives regarding a new deal will be held at the end of the season, on the proviso that he continues to perform.
His 27 appearances in all competitions this season have yielded 10 goals and three assists.
When asked if he expected Lacazette to be offered a new deal, Campbell told Football Insider:“I truly believe Mikel Arteta has a plan for Lacazette and the team.

“Come the summer, it depends if Arteta and Edu can acquire the players that they want.
“What you do not do is cut your nose off to spite your face half-way through a season. It is important to remember that even in the summer, Lacazette will still be an Arsenal player.
“Lacazette’s new contract is probably dependant on whether Arteta is able to attract the players that he wants. I think it is smart management.”
Speaking on Lacazette’s future last week, Arteta said: “We will talk certainly about his contract situation.
“At the moment what I want is that he keeps performing the way he is at the moment until the end of the season and then it will be the right time to talk about it.”
