Campbell backs 20-year-old to shine for Arsenal amid Athletic update on 'amazing' Kounde

Kevin Campbell is adamant Arsenal do not need to invest in another centre-half this summer amid reported interest in Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners striker instead backed William Saliba, 20, and Gabriel Magalhaes to “form a formidable partnership” at the heart of the defence next season.

The Athletic claim Arsenal have been tracking Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde this year with a view to a summer move.

However, it is said that the player’s £50million valuation is a stumbling block in a potential deal.

Campbell would rather see Mikel Arteta put faith in £27million signing William Saliba next season.

“Kounde is being coveted by some big clubs,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He an amazing player but I cannot see that happening because of Saliba.

“The club have already invested so much money in him so at the very least I expect them to give him one full season. He had an exceptional second half of the season at Nice and what he has done has been amazing considering how young he is.

“Arteta needs to give this kid a chance next season. I mean no disrespect to Rob Holding and others but Saliba needs to come in and play. He has all of the attributes needed to succeed. He has pace, power and the build so let’s see him play.

“I think Saliba and Gabriel could form a formidable partnership at Arsenal for years to come. They have to be played together though.”
