Campbell hails Lemina as Newcastle enter reported talks over 'great' £4m deal

Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina is not being targeted by Newcastle United as an alternative to Joe Willock.

That is the view of former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the potentially “great signing” of Lemina, 27.

According to the Daily Mail (21st July), the Magpies have opened talks with Southampton over a £4million deal for the centre-midfielder.

It is reported that Steve Bruce’s side are willing to offer Lemina a three-year contract having been impressed by his loan spell at Fulham last season.

The 13-times Gabon international has less than 12 months left on his contract at St. Mary’s.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Lemina’s arrival would spell the end of the club’s pursuit of Arsenal’s Willock, Campbell said:

“I don’t think Newcastle fans need to worry about him being a direct replacement for Joe Willock. He plays in a deeper role.

“He is a holding midfielder who puts a tackle in, can battle and is very good on the ball. Lemina is a player who could bring some real stability to their midfield. I think he would be a great signing because he has proven that he can handle the Premier League.

“He could easily partner a Joe Willock because Willock is more of an attacking threat. A box to box type of player.

“I think they’d compliment each other well. I think they’ve got a chance of signing Lemina and Willock on loan.”
