Campbell makes big claim about Meslier after latest Leeds sighting
Kevin Campbell has backed under-fire Illan Meslier and claimed he is “way ahead of the curve” at Leeds United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners striker compared the 20-year-old to ex-Arsenal shot-stopper Wojciech Szczesny in the sense that his age is often forgotten.
Sunday was a day to forget for Meslier – the French goalkeeper gave away a penalty and could have done better with two of Arsenal’s goals as Leeds slipped to a 4-2 defeat at the Emirates.
However, only Burnley’s Nick Pope and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone have made more saves than the Leeds shot-stopper this season.
Meslier, who is the youngest goalkeeper to feature in the Premier League this term, has kept seven clean sheets in 22 games.
Campbell sees similarities between the France Under-21 international and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who was criticised heavily during his time at Arsenal.

“Talented young goalkeepers are going to have off-days,” he told Football Insider.
“The first goal was a good shift and hit, which would catch up a lot of keepers and it was a similar situation with Bellerin’s goal.
“But when you look at the penalty incident, he should have done a lot better. He could hold his hands up for a couple of those but he is so young.
“He is performing so high above the curve that he should be at his age so he will have bad days and it will cost the team sometimes. It is similar to the situation Arsenal had with Szczesny.
“Goalkeepers mature later in their career. All of the experiences they have and handle as young men are important. These experiences will stand Meslier in good stead. The longevity of his career is going to be great.”
