Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has been overplayed this season and is facing burnout if he doesn’t get a rest, according to Kevin Campbell.
However, the former Gunners striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, fears that Mikel Arteta cannot take the 19-year-old out of the side as experienced players at the club are underperforming.
Saka has played the most minutes of any of Arsenal’s outfield players this season (2407).
He has contributed six goals and five assists in his 30 appearances across all competitions, having been utilised as a winger, wing-back and full-back.
As quoted by the Mirror, Arteta admitted he needs to be “wise” with his management of the England international amid fears he is being overplayed.
When asked if he is worried by Saka’s workload this season, Campbell told Football Insider: “I think he has been overplayed this season and it is a concern given his age.
“Saka at times needs a rest. The problem is for Mikel Arteta, is that Saka has been carrying the team, even at 19. It does not bode well for the other players when a teenager is carrying the team.
“We have been crying out for the experienced players to step up, for weeks now, but they haven’t.
“Manchester City are a different kettle of fish but you need your experienced players to step up. They just have not.
“It could prove to be instrumental in what Arteta does in the summer. Right now, we cannot afford for Saka not to play.”
