Campbell: This is why David Luiz is set to be handed new Arsenal contract
Kevin Campbell has urged Arsenal to tie David Luiz down to a new contract in spite of some fans protests.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners striker heaped praise on the 33-year-old and described him as “the glue behind the scenes” at the Emirates.
The Independent claim the Brazilian will be offered a 12-month extension having impressed Mikel Arteta with his handling of the younger players at the club.
Football London‘s Chris Wheatley has suggested the club could even offer Luiz a player-coach role, which would see him retain his spot in the squad while serving as part of Arteta’s backroom staff.
Campbell believes Luiz is the leader Arsenal fans have been crying out for.
“A lot of the Arsenal fans are split on David Luiz but I am definitely not,” he told Football Insider.

“The funny and ironic thing about the fan base is that they talk about the need for leaders. Well, we have a leader in the building in Luiz but they do not want him to be re-signed. To me that does not make any sense.
“The fact of the matter is, even if David Luiz signs a new contract, his minutes will diminish next season because the likes of Saliba will be ready by then.
“But even so, you need him in and around the squad for his experience. You never know, you might have an injury crisis and he can come in and play a game. We need him for those reasons.
“He is the glue behind the scenes. I know fans do not see that part but it is key. It really is key.”
