'Car crash waiting to happen' - Exclusive: Darren Bent reacts to Levy's Spurs transfer reveal

Darren Bent claims that that there is a “car crash waiting to happen” at Tottenham after Daniel Levy’s comments about future spending.

The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes that the chairman and manager Jose Mourinho are at odds over the club’s plans heading into the summer transfer window.

Speaking at a meeting with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust, Levy stated that “not qualifying for the Champions League would have an impact all round,” on the club’s spending in the summer market.

He went on to say that “Spurs are a club that makes superstars. Jose Mourinho wants to bring in players who give everything for the club.”

Bent believes that the two senior figures have different ideologies over how to build the club and predicts an unhappy ending.

“It’s a car crash waiting to happen,” Bent told Football Insider.

“By him saying that, Mourinho’s already saying: ‘Give me more players then.’ At the minute it looks like it’s not going to end well.

“If he’s saying: ‘If you want more players you need to finish in the Champions League (places),’ and Mourinho’s saying: ‘Well I can’t do it unless I get more players.’ It’s too late now anyway because the window’s shut.

“It just doesn’t seem it’s going to end well.”

Asked by Football Insider if Mourinho and Levy are at odds with each other, Bent replied: “I’d say so, yeah. It doesn’t seem like it’s the most pleasant environment to be in. ”

Spurs signed Steven Bergwijn permanently and brought Gedson Fernandes in on loan over the January transfer window.

They currently sit eighth in the Premier League table, four points behind Manchester United in fifth.
