Jamie Carragher insisted on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme that there has been a bust-up behind the scenes between Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Pickford.
The Liverpool legend and high-profile pundit made the claim after analysing the conduct of the duo in Everton’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Burnley on Saturday.
Carragher highlighted the fury of midfielder Gueye in the immediate wake of the equaliser scored emphatically by Burnley’s Ashley Barnes after 56 minutes.
Gueye ran a lengthy distance to hit out at goalkeeper Pickford, 23, in a manner that suggested some ill feeling between the pair.
“For him to run 20 to 30 yards to remonstrate with the goalkeeper, that’s not a one-off,” Carragher told Monday Night Football. “There must be something going on behind the scenes between the two of them, something in the dressing room.
“I tell you what, if someone ran 20 yards to have a go at me, I’d have them by the throat, I would. Jordan Pickford just lets it happen. Something must have happened, this has been bubbling over. There’s no way it would have happened otherwise.”
Football Insider verdict:
Carragher has clearly brought an ex-professional’s eye to the conduct of Gueye, who had earlier had words with centre-back Michael Keane. The Senegal international has been one of the few shining lights in a miserable season for Everton, but Carragher was unimpressed that he went to such great lengths to dig out Pickford in public. The keeper has had a fine debut campaign since his mega-money transfer from Sunderland, but his positioning was badly awry for the emphatically-finished Barnes equaliser. It summed up another wretched display from Everton, whose renaissance either side of the new year now feels a long time ago.
