Celtic can solve 'biggest problem' with Vuskovic signing after reported update - Whelan

Celtic could sign the answer to their “biggest problem” in Hajduk Split centre-back Mario Vuskovic, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds United and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Hoops defence is in need of reinforcements amid reported interest in the 19-year-old.

According to Croatian media outlet Sportske Novosti (26th June), Celtic are on the brink of signing Vuskovic after agreeing a £5.16million deal with Hajduk Split.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are in the market for centre-halves this summer with Shane Duffy returning to Brighton and Kristoffer Ajer likely to exit.

Vuskovic has three years remaining on his contract in Split.

Whelan claimed Celtic could make a sizeable profit on the Croatia Under-21 international.

“Celtic’s scouting network has always been excellent,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Last season they changed it up a bit and went for experienced loan signings but it didn’t work out.

“They lacked something at the back last season so hopefully Vuskovic can solve that problem if he comes in. It was their biggest problem.

“Whether it was formation or personnel they could never find that happy medium at the back.

“They have made big profits off young players in the past and perhaps Vuskovic could be the next one.

“It could be a transfer that benefits the club both on and off the pitch if he comes in and does well. They need to get that wheel turning again.”
