Whelan thrilled by 'massive' Celtic announcement today
Celtic could potentially set up a “mouthwatering” tie against one of Europe’s “big boys” if they progress against FC Midtjylland.
So says ex-Scottish Premiership forward Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider ahead of tomorrow’s key Champions League qualifier.
Uefa today (19th July) announced the draw for the third qualifying round and Celtic or Midtjylland will face either PSV Eindhoven or Galatasaray.
Celtic must first overcome the Danish champions over two legs in Ange Postecoglou’s first competitive outing since taking charge in early June.
Celtic have not qualified for the Champions League group stages since 2017-18 and huge prize money is on the line.
Whelan is giddy at the prospect of a clash with a big name in the next round but urged Celtic to first respect a strong Midtjylland side.

“It’s a massive test,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.
“You hope for an easy second game but there are some fantastic sides in there.
“It will be difficult right from the beginning tomorrow night. They need to make sure they are lively and respect who they’re playing against.
“It could leave the door open for a mouthwatering tie against one of the big boys and to play PSV or Galatasaray would be massive, absolutely massive.
“But to get into the Champions League, I don’t think there’s an easy route at all.”
Celtic have faced Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton, Bristol City and Preston in their pre-season programme so far.
The second leg against Midtjylland will take place on 28th July.
