Celtic seem desperate to hang on to defender Dedryck Boyata, in the face of rumours linking him with a move to Lazio.
The Daily Record are reporting that the Hoops are set to offer the player a new deal, as his current deal runs out at the of the season, in an attempt to keep him at the club and end the Lazio interest, who have reportedly offered him a huge contract to leave the Hoops.
Now, Brendan Rodgers might well be a huge fan of the 27-year-old Belgian, but on the face of it the Hoops’ desperation to keep him at the club is quite surprising, when you consider the mistakes that he has made for the Bhoys.
His performance in the 3-2 win over Rangers at Ibrox in March was truly appalling, as he gifted the Ibrox side one goal and was almost culpable for another.
His performance against Motherwell a week later was similarly poor, but he kept his place in the side until the end of the season.
The odd thing is the Hoops have plenty of centre-backs at the club now, and the likes of Jozo Simunovic and Jack Hendry on their day are more than capable of replacing Boayta and partnering with Kristoffer Ajer.
But Rodgers’ devotion to the 27-year-old knows no bounds, and when he makes the decision about his future after the World Cup, a selection of the Hoops support might well be indifferent should he leave but the Hoops boss would be very upset.
