Exclusive: Pundit drops Edouard-Newcastle reveal after 'speaking to Alan Shearer'

Michael Brown claimed Odsonne Edouard is on the radar of Newcastle United but warned he won’t replicate his Celtic feats unless there is a more progressive playing style.

The former Leeds United and Spurs midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the criticism on the likes of Joelinton have been “unfair” given the service provided for the 23-year-old.

As revealed by Football Insider, Edouard, 22, is on the radar of the Magpies as they search for a 20-goal-a-season striker.

Reports surfaced on Tuesday that Mike Ashley had a charge agreement in place with the PCP Partners, headed by Amanda Staveley, for the takeover over the club.

If the takeover is ratified by the Premier League United are expected to have considerable funds to spend in the upcoming window.

The striker, who is valued between £30-40million, has scored 27 goals in 45 appearances in a scintillating campaign for Celtic.

When asked by Football Insider if signing a centre-forward should be the priority at St. James Park this summer, Brown said: “You have to look at the strikers at the football club.

“I was speaking to Alan Shearer and we both said you would expect more from the strikers but what kind of service are they getting? They play a very defensive set up. Sometimes we have been a bit unfair in criticising the top of the pitch at Newcastle.

“With Edouard it depends on numbers and how progressive Newcastle can be with their formation. He is scoring goals and people want to take him so I am sure he will be one in the pot.”

Summer signing Joelinton has been widely criticised for his performances since arriving from Hoffenheim in a club-record £40million deal.

The Brazilian only mustering three goals in 34 appearances in all competitions this season.
