Celtic idol surprised by Matt O'Riley decision after manager's reveal - 'I didn't see that coming'

Frank McAvennie is surprised Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley missed out on a call-up to Denmark squad for their pre-World Cup friendlies.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said O’Riley has proven he is good enough for a place in the national team with his recent performances.

The 21-year-old was left out of the squad for Denmark’s upcoming friendlies against France and Croatia.

As quoted by Football Scotland (13 September), Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand said the midfielder was left out of the senior squad in order to rack up more minutes for the under-21 side.

O’Riley has made four appearances for Denmark’s under-21s after switching allegiance from England earlier this year.

When asked if he was surprised O’Riley was left out of the Danish national team, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Definitely.

That’s what his aim is, to become an international and become a first team choice because he’s playing well enough. He’s just got to believe in himself.

His chance will come, he’s only young. He’s so mature on the pitch but he’s only a young boy. His time will come hopefully it’ll be sooner rather than later because he’s a good player.

“He’s a mainstay at Celtic, he’s taken over from Tom Rogic and to oust him was something that I didn’t see happening.

He has made eight appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side so far this season across all competitions.

During those outings he has provided five assists.
