Celtic look to be leaving Scottish football behind when it comes to spending money.
This was first shown with the recent signing of Odsonne Edouard for a club record fee, and it can be continued with a swoop for Newcastle defender Chancel Nbemba.
The Hoops were previously linked with the Congo centre-back in May, with the Newcastle Chronicle reporting that the Bhoys were ‘interested’ in the centre-back.
Any possible transfer for the player has move on quickly since then though, and the Newcastle Chronicle is reporting that Porto want to sign 23-year-old, but they are refusing to meet his £8million asking price.
In this new financial climate where the Hoops have decided to spend big money, that shouldn’t be too much to ask for, especially as Mbemba would be helping to solve a problem position at the back.
The player might want to join the Portuguese giants according to the aforementioned report, but Rodgers would no doubt be able to talk him round and get him to pledge his cause to the Hoops.
The Bhoys need another centre-back to battle it out with Dedryck Boyata and Kristoffer Ajer for a place in the first-team, and Mbemba certainly fits the criteria of player that Rodgers is looking for.
The Hoops can afford to get the deal done and it would be another huge statement of intent going into next season.
In other Celtic news, it is time for this Hoops player to prove himself in Europe
