Phillips backs Edwards to be a Celtic hit as source reveals update

Former West Brom man Kyle Edwards could have an impact on the Celtic first team if they win the race for his signature this summer.

That is according to ex-Albion striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the in-demand 23-year-old winger.

A Bournemouth source told this site on 15th July that the Championship side is trying to hijack Celtic’s bid to land the free agent.

Football Insider first broke news on 6th July that the Hoops had entered talks with Edwards over a contract.

Cross-border rules mean Celtic would pay only a small compensation fee of £300,000 if Edwards chooses them ahead of the Cherries.

And Phillips claims that the wide man has it was it takes to muscle his way into first-team proceedings at Parkhead.

“If you’re going from the Premier League to the Scottish Premiership, I think he’d do really well up there,” he told Football Insider’s Dylan Childs.

“I think he needs a change of scenery. He can go and play regularly or hopefully at least be involved in matchdays, on the bench or whatever just to show what he can do.

“So it wouldn’t surprise me if he went up there and did really well. Then all of a sudden it might be one of those where West Brom fans are asking: ‘Why did we let him go?‘”

West Brom academy graduate Edwards has featured 49 times since making his debut in 2018.

Eight of those appearances came last season.
