Kieran Maguire backs Celtic to sign multiple Championship stars amid £32m reveal
Celtic have greater room for manoeuvre in their wage budget than most Championship clubs and can capitalise in this summer’s window.
That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after Celtic confirmed the signing of Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday on 1st July.
The 20-year-old defender is the Hoops’ second signing from Wednesday in recent times after midfielder Liam Shaw, also 20, joined on a free in June.
Maguire revealed that the average annual wage bill for clubs in England’s second-tier was £32million while Celtic’s is north of £52m.
And the spreadsheet boffin claims that Celtic could take advantage of the financial fallout from the pandemic and raid the Championship.
He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “Clubs in the Championship lost nearly £700million between them for the last financial year.

“That was with Covid impacting the last three months of the season. Those losses will have been amplified in 2020-21.
“So we are seeing clubs below the top-tier kick out players who are out of contract or who are on high wages.
“Celtic are in a good position. Celtic’s wage bill is over £1m-a-week. The average annual wage bill in the Championship is £32m so Celtic have a lot to offer.
“Their wage bill was only exceeded by West Brom, Stoke, Leeds and Fulham in the Championship in 2020.
“So looking at players from a club like Wednesday, you can make it worth their while to move north border.”
