Celtic make move to sign Crystal Palace star Justin Devenny - 'The perfect deal'

Celtic are making moves to sign Crystal Palace star Justin Devenny as they aim to bolster their midfield late in the window.

The Scotland-born midfielder has emerged as a late target for Martin O'Neill's side, and talks are ongoing over a move which would see him join on loan for the season.

Crystal Palace would prefer a permanent sale, as they aim to raise funds for reinvestment, but the 22-year-old is believed to be keen on a move to Glasgow this summer.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that signing Devenny could be "the perfect deal" for Celtic, despite concerns about his Premier League displays.

Devenny has featured regularly for Crystal Palace over the last couple of seasons, and notably fired home the penalty which saw them lift the Community Shield last year.

He is also a regular for Northern Ireland on the international stage, but will be allowed to leave Selhurst Park in the near future, with Crystal Palace open to his exit.

Brown told Football Insider on 11 August that Crystal Palace are aiming to cash in on a number of fringe players this summer, with Devenny among a number of potential sales.

Celtic have an advantage in their pursuit of the midfielder, as the Scottish transfer window does not close until 3 September, despite the English window closing today.

Devenny has emerged as a late loan target for Celtic, and with the player keen on the switch, could reach an agreement sooner rather than later.

"Gettning Justin Devenny in could be the perfect deal for Celtic," Brown told Football Insider.

"I don't think he's quite good enough to be a regular in the Premier League, but certainly has the attributes and ability to be a success in the Scottish Premiership.

"He's an all-action midfielder, he has a lot of energy and willingness to run and work hard in and out of posession, and he can play in multiple positions.

"So that makes him the ideal player for Celtic, really, and he is somebody who seems to be firmly on their list of targets.

"Crystal Palace are willing to let him go, they would like to get a good fee for him if they can, and I believe the player is open to a move back to Scotland as well.

"So it will be one to watch to see if Celtic can get it done, but it doesn't strike me as being a particularly tough deal, with everybody open to making it happen."

Which other midfielders are on Celtic's radar?

Devenny is not the only midfielder Celtic are looking to bring in ahead of the transfer deadline, with multiple options on their radar in this late stage of the window.

The position had already been a priority for O'Neill, but following Arne Engels' move to West Ham, their efforts have accelerated in recent weeks.

Football Insider revealed on 1 September that Celtic are now confident of completing the signing of PSV Eindhoven star Joel van den Berg before the transfer window closes.

The midfielder is set to undergo a medical on Tuesday, with the Bhoys now working hard in the background to finalise his permanent switch to Parkhead.

The Glasgow giants have agreed a deal worth £3million for the 19-year-old, having made significant progress in negotiations with the Dutch club in recent days.
