Celtic’s Benjamin Nygren is set to be at the 2026 World Cup with Sweden this summer.

The attacking midfielder has been one of the Hoops’ best players this season as they lifted a domestic double.

The 24-year-old will now be aiming to replicate this form in the USA, Canada and Mexico as Sweden look to put on a memorable show.

However, in their warm-up friendlies, things have been difficult for Sweden, and they drew 2-2 against Greece on Thursday, with Nygren putting in another disappointing display.

As a result, the Swedish media were far from happy with the performance of the squad and were quick to criticise Nygren ahead of their World Cup campaign.

Benjamin Nygren struggles against Greece

It has not been a good week for Sweden or Nygren.

The midfielder came off the bench during the 3-1 defeat to Norway on Monday, but was unable to make a meaningful impact.

Nevertheless, Graham Potter gave him a chance to shine against Greece, but the Celtic star once again failed to prove why he should be in the starting XI during the World Cup.

According to Fotmob on 5 June, the attacking midfielder only created one chance, had just one shot which was off target, completed just 79 per cent of his passes, did not complete a dribble and only won 25 per cent of his ground duels.

As a result, the Swedish media were far from impressed and were quick to criticise the performance.

TV Machen.nu wrote: “Invisible for much of the opening half but grew into the game as it went on. Got more exposure at the start of the second half when Sweden was a bit more offensive.”

In comparison, Fotbollskanalen stated: “Shuffled and gave. Didn't stand out significantly.”

Can Celtic keep hold of Nygren this summer?

Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Nygren has his heart set on a move to the Premier League this summer transfer window.

The Swede is understood to view a move to the English top-flight as the natural next step for his career, and teams are already queuing up to offer that move to him this summer.

Swedish media react to Benjamin Nygren’s performance as Celtic star disappoints vs Norway

He has drastically enhanced his reputation within the game during his debut campaign in Scotland, and sources say that he is ready to test himself at the highest level.

A successful World Cup with Sweden could increase interest further, especially if he is able to go far in the competition.

However, it remains to be seen if the Hoops are able to convince the midfielder to continue his career at Parkhead this summer.
