Celtic seem increasingly unlikely to appoint Robbie Keane as their new manager following a dramatic turn of events in the last few days.

Martin O’Neill has agreed terms to stay as permanent manager to seemingly end what had been a two-horse race for the dugout next season.

Keane had been the frontrunner after talks with Dermot Desmond this week, propelling him as the bookies’ favourite to take the role.

However, he could now be headed to Burnley, with his odds at one bookmaker being slashed down to 5/1 to make a switch to Turf Moor, making him the third-favourite.

The Clarets are yet to appoint Scott Parker’s successor as they prepare for life back in the Championship, and this could prove to be detrimental to Celtic’s plans.

Robbie Keane divides Celtic fanbase

Keane’s potential move to Burnley will be celebrated by many Hoops fans.

It is clear that many supporters do not want the former Celtic star in the dugout next year and are very passionate about this stance.

This is mainly due to Keane’s managerial tenure at Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv between 2023 and 2024.

On top of this, his final season at Ferencvaros did not go to plan as he missed out on the top-flight title. However, he did manage to lift the Hungarian Cup.

As a result, many fans will be hopeful that Desmond’s potential plans to appoint Keane will fall through, especially now that Burnley are rumoured to be interested in the former Republic of Ireland international.

Who are Celtic looking to sign this summer?

While Celtic remain undecided on who will be their next manager, Football Insider has exclusively revealed that the Hoops are eyeing a move for Gyor midfielder Milan Vitalis.

The Hungarian international has been watched by scouts on several occasions this season as his club beat Keane’s side to the top-flight title.

He is seen as someone with real potential who could make an immediate impact at the club next season.

Vitalis notched nine goals and four assists throughout the 2025-26 campaign in what was a highly impressive return for the midfielder.

However, with Aberdeen and Rangers also eyeing the star, it remains to be seen if Celtic can beat their rivals to get the deal over the line.
