Sources: Celtic set sights on 'outstanding' Everton man
Cetlic are considering David Moyes as a potential replacement for Martin O'Neill next summer, sources have told Football Insider.
O'Neill has faced questions about his position at Parkhead, but regardless of whether he retains the club's backing, he is expected to leave when his contract expires next year.
The Everton boss' contract is also set to expire next summer, and given his connections to the club after his time there as a player, could be an ideal candidate for the position.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Moyes is firmly on Celtic's radar as a potential future boss although nothing is imminent.
Despite having strong admirers at Parkhead, there are no plans in place currently for Moyes to replace O'Neill, with no plans as things stand to identify their next manager.
Celtic hope O'Neill will see out the season despite the pressure on his position, at which stage they will assess potential candidates, and the Everton boss could be among them.
Could Celtic look to appoint David Moyes?
Foremer Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider last month that Moyes will be available to speak to other clubs amid uncertainty about his position on Merseyside.
With his contract set to expire next summer and no new deal on the table as things stand, Celtic could be among a number of clubs looking to lure the boss away from Everton.
Given his knowledge of the club, excellent track record and CV in management, there is a growing feeling that Moyes could be the ideal replacement for O'Neill.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "It's a move that has been talked about for a long time because obviously Moyes has got links with Celtic.
"He played for the club, he knows the club well, and that's why there are always links with David Moyes and a potential return to Celtic.
"He has got an outstanding managerial CV, he's managed the likes of Man United, did a very good job at West Ham, and he's doing a great job at Everton in his second spell there.
"So he would bring great experience to any club if he was to leave Everton, but nothing is certain about his future at the moment.
"There isn't anything imminent or certain about a potential move to Celtic for David Moyes, but he is certainly on their radar. It remains to be seen which direction they want to go in."
Will O'Neill see out the season at Celtic?
Speculation about Moyes' future and a possible move to Celtic comes alongside doubts about whether O'Neill will see out his contract which is set to run until next summer.
The boss has come under pressure amid a difficult run of form, with fans calling for his head before the international break after two Old Firm defeats in the space of a week.
Former Man United coach Mick Brown told Football Insider on 16 October that Celtic have not ruled out the possibility of O'Neill departing before his contract expires.
This comes following their heavy 4-1 defeat to Benfica in the Europa League, after they trailed 3-0 at half-time, which has seen his vocal critics speak out yet again.
While a 2-0 win against Motherwell at Fir Park last weekend eased the pressure on O'Neill's position, it has not appeased the supporters, with the club also concerned.
