Sources: Celtic's new Gvidas Gineitis transfer plan revealed
Celtic are set to renew their interest in Gvidas Gineitis in January if Torino lower their price tag even further, sources have told Football Insider.
Gineitis emerged as Celtic's top midfield target throughout the summer as they chased several midfield additions.
They remained keen on his services right up until the Scottish transfer deadline last Thursday, and came close to agreeing a deal with Torino.
The deal fell apart at the eleventh hour, with reports stating that Celtic's £9million proposal fell below Torino's £13m valuation of his services.
Celtic will return to the table to sign Gineitis in the new year if his price tag is lowered, but a deal could be tough to do midway through the campaign.
Martin O'Neill was able to bolster his midfield options by signing Oliver Sorensen, but the club still want to invest new signings with a view to a long-term rebuild.
Celtic keeping Gvidas Gineitis on their radar for January
Gineitis featured 31 times for Torino across league and cup games last season, and has started this term strongly as a regular in their midfield.
Sources exclusively revealed to Football Insider last month that Gineitis was keen on a move to Celtic to play European football.
Their failure to qualify for the Champions League through the playoffs saw a deal soon deemed unlikely due to the finances involved.
The Hoops continued to push for his signature regardless, but were ultimately priced out of a move last week.
Gineitis' agent has since revealed that personal terms between his client and Celtic were never agreed, despite reports to the contrary.
He remains under contract with the Serie A club until 2029, and Celtic are only likely to get a deal done in January if they need to cash in on his services.
What has O'Neill said about Celtic's failed pursuit of Gineitis?
O'Neill's squad looks to be in good stead for the rest of the campaign despite their move for Gineitis collapsing late on.
The Hoops have won all five of their Premiership matches so far and have reached the Premier Sports quarter-final stage.
He was open and honest about their failed pursuit of the Lithuanian international when asked about reporters last week, saying: "We had more than an interest in him at the time, but it’s all very well having an interest and people feeling that they might want to come, you still have to negotiate with the club. That was a major thing at the end of the day.
“When clubs become adamant about a certain price for a player – and we are not in the market for overpriced players like in England – you have to deal with it as best as you can. If you feel there is a price for a player, sure you can negotiate but if there is not really any phenomenal negotiations, then you need to do other things."
O'Neill also hinted at another possible move for him in January, saying: "I’m sure you could revisit it. Lads like him can be terrific or drop out of the team, who knows. I am genuinely happy with what we have."
