Sources: How Celtic players feel about Martin O’Neill leaving

Celtic's players remain behind manager Martin O'Neill as his future at the club hangs in the balance, sources have told Football Insider.

O'Neill recently admitted that he would consider his position at Parkhead during the international break.

His hint at walking away from Celtic came after their second defeat to rivals Rangers in just seven days.

The Hoops remain top of the Premiership for now, but have crashed out of the Champions League and were also beaten in their first Europa League fixture last week.

Despite the club's issues, the Celtic squad want O'Neill to continue as their manager for now, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast.

The pressure is on for the 74-year-old to get the best out of their key players and summer signings if he is still in charge when they return to action.

Martin O'Neill retains backing of Celtic players despite exit concerns

Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson revealed in midweek that the board are still behind O'Neill, and so he is not likely to be sacked anytime soon.

Liam Scales raised concerns that the Celtic players had turned on their manager by rejecting his claim that they had been taught a "European lesson" by Ferencvaros last week.

That is not the case just yet, however, with everyone pulling in the same direction at Parkhead to keep the club in silverware contention on all fronts.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "The Celtic chief executive has come out and backed Martin O'Neill, and everyone at the club is behind him to try and turn things around.

"The club are trying to rally around O'Neill and everything else and trying to get their season back on track once this international break is over."

O'Neill has lasting worries over Viljami Sinisalo at Celtic

O'Neill moved to bolster his goalkeeping department in the summer by signing Sam Johnstone on a season-long loan from Wolves.

The 33-year-old has only featured twice since arriving at Parkhead, with Sinisalo still seemingly preferred as the number one for now.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that O'Neill still has concerns over Sinisalo as his main keeper and so Johnstone looks to be in line for a spell in the team soon.

It remains to be seen if the Englishman enters the starting eleven for the Hoops' trip to Motherwell on 11 October.
