Benjamin Tahirovic once labelled one of Ajax’s ‘greatest talents’ as Celtic make approach
Former wonderkid Benjamin Tahirovic is heavily linked with a move to Celtic this summer as Martin O’Neill step ups his ambitions to overhaul the midfield.
The Hoops have reportedly made an approach to ask information about 23-year-old Brondby IF star ahead of a potential move.
Tahirovic made the move over to Denmark in 2025 after previously spending two seasons at Ajax.
In the Dutch capital, the midfielder was previously highly rated, with Director of Football Affairs, Sven Mislintat, once labelling him as one of “greatest talents he has ever seen”.
In the end, it did not work out for Tahirovic at Ajax, but he has since gone on to be a crucial player at Brondby IF.
In the 2025-26 campaign, the midfielder made 25 league appearances for the club as they qualified for Europe.
Gianluca Di Marzio: Celtic really like Benjamin Tahirovic
Celtic are expected to overhaul their midfield this summer, with multiple big names linked away from the club.
Tahirovic could be a player who is brought in to oversee a new era at Celtic Park, with journalist Gianluca Di Marzio confirming to SpilXperten that the Hoops are heavily interested.
He said: “Celtic really wants Benjamin Tahirovic. They like him a lot, but of course I cannot guarantee that they will finish the deal with him and Brondby. But for sure, they already contacted the club to ask for information on this player, like the price and the opportunity to get him.
“Personally, I think he can be a very good player for Celtic. I remember him from AS Roma and he has the right abilities, but on a personal level and football-wise, but we will have to see.
“All I can say is that they want him, and they are trying to get him.”
If they can get the deal over the line, Celtic will be hoping that they can unlock Tahirovic potential that was once hoped of him years ago.
Back when he first joined Ajax from Roma in 2023, Mislintat believed that his talent was exceptional.
He stated to Ajax TV: “In my opinion, he is one of the greatest talents I have ever seen in this position. Of course, he needs to develop, but that is possible here and there, and we will help him with that.”
What are Celtic’s transfer plans?
Football Insider exclusively revealed that Celtic know they need to back O’Neill and spend more in the summer transfer window.
The board are keen to back their manager to avoid another season like 2025-26, where they only narrowly won the Scottish Premiership title.
Many supporters have been angered by their lack of big signings in transfer windows gone by, but that looks set to change.
This caused many fans to protest against the ownership, especially when it looked likely that the club would miss out on Champions League football as well as the league title.
It remains to be seen if Tahirovic will be part of his rebuild in Glasgow, or if Celtic will move on to other targets, especially if the midfielder’s price tag goes up due to the 2026 World Cup.
