Exclusive: Celtic plot permanent Marcelo Saracchi transfer, this is what deal will depend on

Celtic are currently weighing up the idea of making a permanent move for left-back Marcelo Saracchi this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Uruguayan's parent club Boca Juniors are planning to sell him before the start of next season, and any chance of a permanent stay at Celtic Park looks set to hinge on his personal stance.

Sources say that a deal could be struck, provided that Saracchi is content with playing back-up minutes on the left side of the defence, with Kieran Tierney highly likely to remain first choice in that area next season.

Celtic's transfer plans for 2026-27 could yet include a pursuit for Saracchi, but it will also require a desire from the player to get a deal done.

Martin O'Neill endorses Marcelo Saracchi stay

Saracchi has endured an injury-hit campaign since he completed his loan switch to Parkhead last summer, and he has found it difficult to break into the starting XI as a result.

Tierney has been the go-to option for Martin O'Neill since he reverted to a back four upon returning to the interim manager's role in January, with Saracchi starting just two games since that switch in the dugout.

Nevertheless, he has played a capable role as the understudy to the former Arsenal man and has amassed 19 appearances in all competitions across the entire season.

O'Neill told the Glasgow Times back in February that he thinks the Celtic board should be looking at a permanent deal for Saracchi, after he scored a crucial goal in their dramatic late win over Livingston.

The 74-year-old is highly unlikely to still be in charge of the team next season, but his opinion carries weight at Parkhead, and it is clear that his endorsement hasn't gone unnoticed by those above him.

Celtic eye signings for defensive rebuild

Football Insider revealed last week that Celtic will add at least one new centre-back to their squad this summer in a bid to rebuild the middle of their backline.

There is a feeling within the club that they have been left light in that area after a series of key injuries in that section of the squad, and plans are already in place to address that in the summer.

The managerial situation is providing uncertainty in terms of their top transfer targets at the moment, but it has become clear that defensive reinforcements will be a priority regardless of who takes the reins.

Saracchi could be set to form part of that plan, but it appears that the ball could now be in his court as to whether he wants to prolong his stay in Glasgow.
