Sources: Celtic submitting new midfielder offer, club-record transfer could be on

Celtic are preparing to submit an improved bid for Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis, sources have told Football Insider.

The Bhoys have identified the Lithuanian international as a "key target" this summer, and have already seen their opening offer knocked back by the Italian outfit.

Torino are holding out to get £12million for the 22-year-old, which means Celtic may need to break their transfer record in order to sign him.

However, sources say that the Glasgow giants are keen to avoid spending that much on Gineitis if possible, and may try to get him for a cut-price fee.

It is expected that Torino would "find it hard" to turn down an offer that comes close to their valuation, such is the boost it would provide to their own transfer budget.

Celtic see the youngster as a player with huge potential to develop in the future, but they may have to lay out a significant fee if they want to get him.

Who is Gvidas Gineitis?

Celtic are working to add a new central midfielder to their squad this summer, as it appears increasingly likely that Arne Engels will be heading for the exit.

Gineitis is one of their top targets to fill that requirement at the moment, having become one of the first names on the team sheet in recent years.

He joined the Turin-based outfit back in 2022, having impressed within the youth system at fellow Italian side SPAL.

The left-footed starlet has since progressed to become a promising talent for Torino, as he made 29 appearances in Serie A last term, helping his team to a 12th-placed finish.

Gineitis stands at six feet three inches tall and is predominantly a defensive midfielder by trade, specialising in breaking up play.

Celtic tipped for 'three more' signings after Kasper Hogh deal

Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider last weekend that Celtic need at least "three more" top-quality signings before the end of the window.

The Bhoys recently secured a move for Bodo/Glimt striker Kasper Hogh in an initial £11m deal, and Wyness is adamant that they need more additions of that ilk if they are to enjoy a successful season.

Time is running out before their crucial Champions League play-off tie, and he has stressed that they simply must get more new faces through the door before that two-legged clash.

Gineitis could yet become one of the new additions, but Celtic will need to make a significant financial commitment for a deal to happen.
