Will Ferry showed exactly why Celtic should make a move for Will Ferry this summer after his excellent performance in Dundee United’s 1-1 draw with Rangers on Friday.

The left-back was one of the best players on the pitch as the Tangerines picked up a shock point in Derek McInnes first game as Gers boss.

The 25-year-old was all over the pitch, creating chances for Dundee United down one end, while ensuring defensive stability down the other.

Celtic have been linked with a move to Ferry in recent days, and now the club should look to strike a deal for the Republic of Ireland international.

Martin O’Neill is in need of a full-back this summer to help provide competition for Kieran Tierney.

Ferry is reportedly available for around £1.7million, with Sigma Olomouc seeing a bid of this amount accepted earlier this summer before the defender turned down the move.

Ferry was one of the most underrated players in the Scottish Premiership last season.

While Celtic, Rangers and Hearts were all battling for the title, the defender helped ensure that Dundee United finished seventh and top of their post-split table.

Now, this form has clearly continued into the new campaign, as he dominated the match against Rangers. 

According to Fotmob on 1 August, he had the most touches at 83, created two chances, created a 0.10 xA, completed three dribbles with a 75 per cent success rate, made 12 defensive contributions, won three free-kicks and made 11 passes into the final third.

This is the type of quality Celtic must look to bring in this summer, as he is clearly capable of performing against the best teams in the division.

For around £1.7m, O’Neill will not find a better left-back who knows the league, and a deal simply has to be struck.

The Paderborn midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Parkhead this summer as O’Neill looks to upgrade his midfield.
