Martin O'Neill has signed a one-year contract with an option for an extra year to stay on as Celtic manager following an interim spell that saw his side win the Scottish Premiership.

The 74-year-old returned to the club as a caretaker manager in October after Brendan Rodgers resigned, taking charge of eight games before the arrival of Wilfried Nancy in December.

Nancy's appointment was disastrous, and less than a month later, the Northern Irishman was back to see out the rest of the season.

Celtic were not always convincing, but won 12 of their final 13 to win the league and FA Cup double under O'Neill.

The former Leicester City boss was expected to return to retirement as the Hoops sought a new manager, but his thirst for success has evidently not yet been quenched.

O'Neill is already the Celtic manager with the highest win percentage in history, and he promises to gain further ground in the record books in the next two years.

History awaits for Martin O'Neill

O'Neill's 241 wins from 317 games managed give him a 76.03 per cent win ratio - the highest in Celtic history.

His first stint in charge, between 2000 and 2005, saw 213 of those victories, with the Northern Irishman winning a ridiculous 28 of 35 since his return.

Provided he stays throughout, next season should see O'Neill climb into the top five all-time of Celtic games managed.

Neil Lennon's 337 should be eclipsed before the end of the year, although getting above fourth-placed Billy McNeill's tally of 471 will require another contract extension.

O'Neill's eyes may be on a far more treasured list at Parkhead, however. With the Scottish Premiership and FA Cup double this season, O'Neill won the eighth and ninth major Scottish trophies of his career.

That tally has placed him above Billy McNeill and into the Celtic top five trophy winners, and joint-sixth of all managers in Scottish football history.

Win the treble next season, and O'Neill will be the third most successful Celtic manager of all time and the fifth most successful manager in Scottish domestic history.

What O'Neill said after permanent stay was confirmed

It will not be good news for any non-Celtic supporting fan that O'Neill has committed his future to the Hoops.

The 74-year-old's dominance in Scotland is revered, and he will hope to bring more success to Parkhead next season.

"It is a great privilege for me to continue as Celtic manager," he told the club's website on Thursday.

"Last season will live long in all our memories and to be part of that success has in a big way whetted the appetite to work again for more days like those and bring our supporters those moments.

"I would particularly like to thank the board for giving me this opportunity. Celtic can never rest on past success so we are aiming to drive forward together and deliver again for the club and our fans.

"I thank our fans for their ongoing support, it means everything. I look forward to being back at Celtic Park, when we will come together and strive to bring our fans the success which that support deserves."
