Liverpool have reached an agreement in principle to sign Fabio Carvalho from Fulham, Football Insider understands.

The Premier League giants came within a whisker of landing the attacking midfielder, 19, on deadline day in January but could not process the agreed £8million deal before the window shut.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Liverpool have recommenced negotiations with Carvalho and have an 'agreement in principle' with him to join when he becomes a free agent at the end of June.

Personal terms have been agreed with the Portugal Under-21 international and the deal is in place.

There had been fears that Liverpool could be hijacked by a Premier League or European rival willing to meet Fulham's asking price.

But the Merseysiders are confident of pushing the deal over the line after Carvalho underwent a medical at the end of the last window.

Both Liverpool and Fulham are keen to avoid the transfer fee being decided by an independent tribunal.

Carvalho will be a free agent from the end of June but the fee will be millions as the west London club will be due a significant compensation fee for development costs.

Liverpool lured then 16-year-old Harvey Elliott away from Fulham in 2019 when his contract expired.

The two clubs were unable to reach an agreement over a fee and an independent tribunal decided that Liverpool should pay an initial £1.5million topped up by performance-related add-ons of £2.8m and a 20 per cent sell-on clause.

Carvalho, who has been operating in a number 10 role, has been a key player in Fulham's promotion push.

He has made 24 Championship starts among 29 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing six assists.
