Who is Benjamin Tahirovic? Inside Celtic’s interest in Brondby midfielder
Celtic are looking to sign a new midfielder in the summer transfer window and Benjamin Tahirovic is one name that has been mentioned.
According to Danish outlet Spilxperten, Celtic have "made contact" with Brondby in a bid to sign Tahirovic this summer.
With the futures of Arne Engels, Reo Hatate, Paulo Bernardo and Benjamin Nygren all uncertain, adding a midfielder to the squad looks to be a priority for Celtic.
Celtic fans will want the club to be ambitious in the transfer market, with a new goalkeeper, defender and striker all expected to arrive.
Martin O'Neill has yet to be announced as Celtic's new manager, but the 74-year-old has agreed a one-year deal to stay at the club, meaning he is set to play a pivotal role in the transfer market.
Football Insider has explored everything Celtic fans need to know about Tahirovic before his potential arrival in Glasgow.
What has Benjamin Tahirovic's career looked like so far?
Celtic fans will be able to see Tahirovic in action at this summer's World Cup in North America, but not for the country of his birth.
Tahirovic was born in Sweden, but he has opted to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina on the international stage.
The Bosnian international started his senior career in Sweden at Vasalund IF, before he earned a move to Roma in 2021.
Working under Jose Mourinho at Roma, the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss was full of praise for Tahirovic in a post-match press conference: "He is going to be a great player... He has a top psychological profile. He is a quality player but also has the mental fortitude to handle the pressure."
After two years at Roma, Tahirovic has since played for Ajax, but switched clubs again after just a two-year spell.
Currently at Brondby, where he has only been since February 2025, Tahirovic is open to leaving the club due to his relationship with former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.
Football Insider reported that Brondby would ask for £5million to let Tahirovic depart only 12 months on from spending £2.3m to bring him back to Sweden.
What sort of player is Benjamin Tahirovic?
The 23-year-old stands at 6ft 3in, making him an imposing figure in the middle of the park.
A defensive midfielder, Tahirovic would not be adding goals to the Celtic team as he only scored three times in all competitions across his senior career.
Tahirovic only started 13 league matches for Brondby in the 2025-26 campaign, and had a 85.6 per cent pass completion rate, created 19 chances, and won 48.1 per cent of his ground duels.
Concerning for Celtic would be the fact that Tahirovic was dribbled past 13 times, committed 20 fouls, and won only 35.7 per cent of his aerial duels, despite his height.
A long-term replacement for Callum McGregor perhaps, rather than either the goal scoring duo of Engels or Nygren, but it remains to be seen whether Celtic will make their move for Tahirovic.
