Top-flight side failed in bid to sign Tottenham first teamer last season - report

By Aramide Oladipo

Ligue 1 side Nice failed in an attempt to sign Tottenham youngster Harry Winks last season, according to a report.

The Daily Mail claims that the French outfit wanted to snap up the 21-year-old on a loan deal last season but Spurs rebuffed the offer as manager Mauricio Pochettino was confident that he could progress in the first-team.

The midfielder was given his first senior debut for the England national team on Sunday afternoon in their 1-0 victory away at Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier.

The youngster completed the full 90 minutes and he was one of the most impressive players on the pitch.

Winks managed to enjoy game time in the Spurs first-team last season, making a total of 33 appearances in all competitions.

The Englishman notched up his first ever goal for the club in the final London derby at White Hart Lane in the 3-2 win over West Ham United.

The midfielder suffered a terrible ankle injury in April which ruled him out of the final two months of the campaign.

Winks managed to make a return at the start of this season and he has featured in seven matches for Spurs.

The England international has five years remaining on his contract at Tottenham.

Football Insider verdict

Tottenham’s decision to keep faith in the youngster turned out to be the best for both club and player. Winks has matured into an intelligent midfielder and he is always someone who is looking to pass the ball forward and expose the opposition’s defence. His development has been helped with regular game time in the Premier League and if he manages to stay fit throughout the season, he will certainly have a decent chance of being selected to represent his country in the upcoming World Cup in Russia. Although Nice might have been disappointed in missing out on the midfielder, they still enjoyed a fine campaign as they pose a serious title challenge for the majority of the season in France.
