Championship: Supercomputer makes new Wrexham playoff prediction ahead of final fixtures

The Championship playoff race is set to go down to the wire, with zero clubs having their place confirmed ahead of the final weekend of action.

Seven teams could currently end the campaign in the playoffs, with Coventry City the only team in the top eight ensured to miss out.

While the battle for the final automatic promotion slot could be essentially over on Tuesday if Ipswich Town beats Southampton, the race for sixth place is currently too tight to call.

Wrexham, Hull City and Derby County are all within a shot of finishing in the final playoff position going into the final game on Saturday.

Now, after Wrexham’s defeat to the already promoted Coventry City side, Opta has tipped the Tigers to win their place back.

Opta predicts Hull City to secure Championship playoff spot

Hull City’s and Wrexham’s recent poor run of form has opened the race up to Derby County going into the final day.

Hull and Wrexham are level on points and separated by just one goal, whereas the Rams sit one point below the pair in eighth.

TeamExpected final points
Hull City 71.48
Wrexham71.46
Derby County70.67
Hull City are expected to finish in the playoffs

Going into the final day, the Tigers face a tricky home test against Norwich City, whereas Wrexham will host a Middlesbrough side who could still earn automatic promotion as it stands.

In comparison, Derby arguably face the easiest test as they host Sheffield United, who have recently dipped in form.

Nevertheless, Opta on 27 April has now backed Hull City to pip both sides to the final spot in the top six, giving them a predicted points total of 71.48.

In contrast, Wrexham are narrowly behind with a 71.46 expected points total, with Derby’s sitting at 70.67.

Who is the favourite to win automatic promotion?

Unsurprisingly, Ipswich Town are comfortable favourites to finish second.

The Tractor Boys have a game in hand against Southampton, and if they win, they will be all but promoted, given their superior goal-difference over Millwall.

As a result, Opta has given them an expected points total of 83.14, with Millwall set to finish third with a total of 82.02.

Following this, Middlesbrough is predicted to finish fourth, and then Southampton fifth.

Therefore, if this sceniro plays out, Millwall will face Hull City in the one playoff semi-final, with Middlesbrough against Southampton being the other tie.
