Sources: Charlton Athletic in pole position to sign Cambridge striker Mullin

Charlton Athletic are leading the race to sign Cambridge United goal machine Paul Mullin, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The League One club have prioritised the capture of a proven lower league marksman as they set their sights on promotion.

A Charlton source has told Football Insider that the club have made an approach for Mullin and are now in pole position to sign him.

The forward was the top scorer in League Two last season with 31 goals, and netted 33 times in all competitions.

Mullin has rejected Cambridge’s offer of a new contract and is available on a free transfer from tomorrow.

Charlton’s swoop for Mullin comes as they put the finishing touches to the capture of Sunderland midfielder George Dobson.

Football Insider revealed earlier today the Londoners have agreed a deal for Dobson.

Mullin signed his first professional contract with Huddersfield in 2013.

He would later leave for League Two Morecambe where he would net 28 times in 140 appearances.

Mullin spent one season with Swindon Town after leaving the Shrimps before switching to Tranmere Rovers ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

He scored 11 times in 56 appearances for Tranmere who were promoted to League One in his first season with the club.

He spent the second half of the 2019-20 season on loan with Cambridge and joined permanently the following summer.
