Chelsea backed to match Man City with new signing as £35m details emerge - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Chelsea could emulate Man City’s money-spinning youth model as they plot a restructure of the club’s development system.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed it would be “invaluable” for the Blues to have a “pipeline” of young talent coming through at the club.

According to The Sun (10 September), Chelsea are keen to set up a network of feeder clubs across Europe – closely modelled on the multi-club model which has brought success to Man City.

New owner Todd Boehly wants to revamp the whole structure at Stamford Bridge, including the development of youth players – and is looking to appoint a new sporting director.

Chelsea’s search for a new signing in that role has taken a new twist after RB Salzburg chief Christian Freund reportedly rejected a move to Stamford Bridge.

Man City raked a reported £35million during the summer by selling Under-21 stars like Romeo Lavia, Gavin Bazunu, Samuel Edozie, and Darko Gyabi.

Whelan insisted Chelsea’s new focus on youth “makes sense” after seeing the Citizens’ success with a similar approach.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “The likes of Man City have gone out and done something similar.

“They’ve spent a lot of money on young players, some have made it and some haven’t. What they have done is make a profit on most of the players they bring in.

“That’s business, isn’t it? On the financial side of things, it’s made sense for them.

“Chelsea have got to make sure they bring in the right players and then put the right coaching staff and set-up from the Under-23’s downwards in order to progress that talent.

“I’m sure any head of recruitment they bring in will have an eye for a player.

“It’s not a bad ploy, because it’s important for every club to have that pipeline of young players coming through into the first-team. It’s invaluable at times.”
