Sources: Chelsea plot raid to sign star of Celtic season, £10m will seal deal

Chelsea are keeping tabs on Southampton goalkeeper and prime Celtic summer target Fraser Forster, Football Insider understands.

The Premier League giants are assessing the giant keeper amid doubts over his future at St Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton are set to listen to offers for Forster, 32, this summer and a recruitment source has told Football Insider that Chelsea are among the many clubs interested.

They see the 6ft 7in giant as a potential number two rather than a regular starter.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, who became the most expensive keeper in history when he joined Chelsea for £72million in 2018, was restored to the starting XI before the mid-March lockdown.

But he has had two mixed seasons at Stamford Bridge, while his deputy Willy Caballero is 38 and has just a year left on his contract.

Chelsea are in the market for at least one new keeper this summer and have already demonstrated their ambition by agreeing to sign Timo Werner in a £54million deal to be completed later this month.

Forster is valued at around £10m by Southampton as prices tumble due to the pandemic.

He had plummeted to third in the goalkeeper pecking order under Ralph Hasenhuttl before he rejoined Celtic on loan last August.

The Hoops will pull out all stops to re-sign Forster although his £70,000-a-week Saints salary is a major stumbling block to a permanent deal.

The former Newcastle United man has played some of the best football of his career in his second spell at Parkhead.

He was integral to their successful title defence and delivered one of the outstanding individual displays of the season in last December’s Scottish League Cup win against Rangers.

In other Celtic news, it can be revealed the club are hiking up their offer in bid to re-sign international.
