Levi Colwill is set to hold contract talks with Chelsea this summer to deter interest from clubs including Liverpool, sources have told Football Insider.

The 23-year-old has recently returned from a long spell on the sidelines with a cruciate ligament tear and is working towards full fitness ahead of the end of the season.

His current contract at Stamford Bridge is set to run until 2029, while the club have the option to extend by an additional year, but new talks are now set to take place.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Chelsea hope to deter interest from rival clubs by getting Colwill tied down.

Liverpool are putting transfer plans in place and have been long-term admirers of the centre-back, but now look set to miss out on a deal, with Colwill to remain at Chelsea.

Could Liverpool move to sign Levi Colwill?

Football Insider revealed on 22 May that Liverpool “would love” to sign Colwill if they were given any indication that he could be available this summer.

Contract talks are not currently taking place at Stamford Bridge, leading to potential encouragement that he could become available, placing clubs on alert.

However, Chelsea would be extremely reluctant to see the centre-back leave this summer, while he is believed to be happy at the club and is likely to stay.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “It seems that Colwell is happy at Chelsea. Chelsea are very happy with him.

“I don’t think there’s any panic or anything at Chelsea with discussions over his future, I’m sure they will probably take place over the summer.

“Chelsea are pretty relaxed about the whole situation as is Colwill.

“Talks will be held over the summer to try and see if they can sort out his future.

“As things stand right now Chelsea are planning for Levi Colwill to still be at the club and the player himself is happy at the club.”

Which centre-back could Liverpool target after Colwill?

With Liverpool becoming increasingly likely to miss out on a move for Colwill this summer, they will be forced to set their sights on alternative targets.

The Reds are viewing the addition of a new centre-back as a priority despite having agreed a deal to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes as they aim to bolster their defence.

Football Insider revealed on 10 May that Liverpool want to sign Micky van de Ven from Tottenham and could capitalise on a miserable season in North London.

There is a growing feeling that the 25-year-old could be tempted to leave Spurs this summer as they remain in a closely-fought relegation battle.

Regardless of whether or not Tottenham stay in the Premier League, though, Van de Ven could be lured away with Liverpool waiting to pounce.
