Chelsea remain interested in Adam Wharton but are set to delay a move for his services until the next summer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Blues have held a long-term interest in Crystal Palace star Wharton, but decided against trying to sign him in the summer window.

They instead looked to complete a move for Monaco's Lamine Camara for a smaller fee, but dramatically missed out on sealing his services on Deadline Day.

Xabi Alonso has now been left with a lack of depth in midfield until January at least, with full-backs Reece James and Malo Gusto set to deputise.

Wharton is still admired by Chelsea, but they are unlikely to make a move for his services in January as Palace stand firm against letting him leave.

The Eagles are keen to keep hold of their star man and have no plans to let him depart midway through the campaign.

Chelsea still in Adam Wharton race as January move deemed unlikely

Man City saw an enquiry to sign Wharton rebuffed late on in the summer transfer window.

Palace rejected the approach by insisting that he was not for sale, and they will continue to hold that stance in January.

He has proven his worth as one of the Premier League's best holding midfielders at Selhurst Park over the last three seasons.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Palace have an informal agreement with Wharton to allow him to pursue another opportunity next summer.

Chelsea have a big gap in their midfield left by Enzo Fernandez that needs filling, but are not likely to make a move for Wharton until after the season ends.

Chelsea make Yves Bissouma contract decision

Chelsea's failure to sign Camara has seen them linked with several free agents to bolster Alonso's midfield options.

Reports have claimed that the Blues have been offered the chance to sign Bissouma on a free transfer after he left Tottenham in June.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Chelsea will not move for Bissouma as Alonso is content with the options at his disposal for now.
