Cole Palmer 'has played his last game for England' as Thomas Tuchel slams Chelsea star

Chelsea star Cole Palmer may already have played his last game for England under Thomas Tuchel after leaving the boss "disappointed".

The 24-year-old was included in the original squad for the September international break, but pulled out on medical grounds and instead remained at Chelsea.

However, Tuchel reacted angrily to the decision as he insisted the midfielder "misses too many opportunities" to impress and prove he deserves to wear an England shirt.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that he would be "surprised" if Tuchel calls upon Palmer as part of his squad again during his tenure as England boss.

The Chelsea star last represented his country in a freindly defeat to Japan in March, but missed out on the World Cup squad, and has won just three caps since October 2024.

Having repeatedly missed camps through minor injuries, Palmer now appears to have lost the manager's confidence, while others are ahead of him in the pecking order.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider on 22 September that Palmer's decision to pull out of the England squad was heavily influenced by Chelsea.

The 24-year-old withdrew from the squad to help manage his workload, after playing all 90 minutes of Chelsea's defeat to Brentford before the break.

While Chelsea are keen for Palmer to manage his minutes and avoid any future injuries, the decision has not gone down well with Tuchel, who now appears fed up with the player.

"There's a real possibility Palmer has played his last game for England under Thomas Tuchel," Brown told Football Insider.

"As the manager said, he has missed far too many squads, whether it's through injuries, managing his work load, or

"I'm not convinced Tuchel is his biggest fan to begin with, but everybody was shouting for him to get called up, and when he finally made the decision, Palmer dropped out.

"From his point of view, why should he keep offering these chances if he isn't going to take them? Does he want to play for England or not?

"There are plenty of players in Palmer's position who can do a job for England and who have proven to Tuchel that he can trust them and rely on them to perform.

"It looks like he's missed his chance. How he feels about that, I'm not sure, it doesn't seem like he's been massively concerned about missing out before."

Which other players have been questioned under Tuchel?

Palmer is not the only England player whose role has been in doubt under Tuchel, with Morgan Gibbs-White frequently emerging as a topic of conversation for the boss.

The Nottingham Forest star missed out on the World Cup despite a strong campaign last time out, and was orignially left out of this squad before Palmer's withdrawal.

Former Tottenham scout Bryan King told Football Insider on 22 September that Tuchel has been left with "egg on his face" after eventually being pushed to include Gibbs-White.

It was a shock to many that Gibbs-White was not included in Tuchel's World Cup squad in the summer, after he had scored 18 goals and provided seven assists for Forest.

That led to questions about his long-term place in the squad under Tuchel, and now despite his involvement, there are calls for him to be more involved.
