Danny Welbeck: Media blast Chelsea's new signing after what he did vs AC Milan

Danny Welbeck started for Chelsea on Saturday as they beat AC Milan 3-0 in a pre-season friendly.

It was the striker’s second appearance for the Blues since he made the shock move to Stamford Bridge from Brighton and Hove Albion.

However, the 35-year-old struggled to impress against AC Milan and was soon hooked off by Xabi Alonso.

Welbeck was unable to make any meaningful impact up top, and only had one shot throughout.

As a result, he was roasted by the media after the game, with one outlet claiming that he was “wasteful”.

Chelsea reportedly signed the striker for £5million this month as Alonso looks to add more experience to his squad.

How did Danny Welbeck perform vs AC Milan

Welbeck’s move to Chelsea puzzled many of the Stamford Bridge faithful this summer.

Unfortunately, he did little to put their minds at rest on Saturday.

According to Fotmob on 8 August, Welbeck only completed four passes, had one shot, which was off target, did not complete a single successful dribble, had three touches in the opposition box and did not create a single chance for his teammates.

As a result, when reviewing his performance, The Sun did not hold back in their assessment.

They rated Welbeck a four rating, before going on to say: “Lashed the side netting with a left-footed effort early on, but was wasteful in all honesty in this game and that was about all he did.

“Not overly involved in things for the Blues going forward, with most of the players around him more impactful than he was.”

What other business could Chelsea complete this summer?

Enzo Fernandez has been heavily linked away from Chelsea this summer transfer window.

The Argentina international has attracted interest from both Real Madrid and Manchester City as they look to reinforce their midfield before the window closes.

Now, Man City are odds-on to secure the signing of Fernandez before the transfer window closes.

This comes amid reports that the Manchester club are exploring a move for the 25-year-old midfielder amid Rodri’s links to Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Fernandez previously played under Enzo Maresca at Chelsea before the manager departed midway through the 2025-26 campaign.
