Stefan Borson reveals what 'surprises' him about Chelsea's Honest Ahanor deal

Chelsea's hunt for the signature of Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor would make more sense were Cobham Training Centre lacking talent.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the club will already be looking to make a profit on the 18-year-old.

After just one season at the New Balance Arena, Atalanta are already set to lose their talented centre-back just 12 months on from his £13.7million move from Genoa.

The youngster has already made his debut for the Italy national team, winning caps against Luxembourg and Greece back in June.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Blues are set to splash a total package of £40m on the player's signature, with his pathway soon to be decided.

However, with Xabi Alonso already trying to sell several centre-backs, and the academy having more than enough talent, question marks have been raised.

Chelsea aren't using their 'excellent' academy

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson has questioned why the Blues are not turning more to Cobham Training Centre instead of splashing money on teenagers.

"I think the only surprising thing is Chelsea are a club where, in terms of the quality of their 18-year-olds in-house, they have an excellent academy," he said.

"The question is, why do they need to be spending £40m on bringing in a supplement within that area? But look, it's not just Chelsea.

"Man City have done the same thing with [Jeremy] Monga and other players this summer, despite having an excellent academy.

"The team's, they're opportunistic. So they look at it, and they say, 'Well, this player, do we think we can get value from him? They obviously rate the player very highly."

Who else could Chelsea sign this summer?

Despite completing several high-profile deals, including Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson in a strange twist, business may not be done in West London.

Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton is high on the club's radar at Stamford Bridge, but that kind of deal would likely cost in excess of £100m.

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is also a target, while Emi Martinez is set to join from Aston Villa in a rather small deal for a Premier League goalkeeper.

Chelsea still need to get Tosin Adarabioyo off the books, having found new clubs for Mamadou Sarr, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah.
