Stefan Borson shares Stamford Bridge development verdict as 'bigger issue' emerges at Chelsea

Chelsea supporters wanting a redevelopment of Stamford Bridge will be waiting a long time for plans to emerge.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that major stadium changes are "not coming anytime soon".

Xabi Alonso's arrival has brought some much-needed confidence to West London, but the Blues remain without European football after a 10th-place Premier League finish last term.

Matters are not much better off the pitch either, with Chelsea still in search of a front-of-shirt sponsor for the 2026-27 campaign, having agreed a deal with IFS for six months of last season.

It is understood that Todd Boehly and Co. have aspirations of redeveloping Stamford Bridge, with the aim of increasing the 40,000 capacity to 60,000.

That appears to be quite a number of years away, though, with Borson concerned by the Blues' business decisions over the last few years.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson does not see any stadium renovations in the horizon in West London, with the club's finances needing to be addressed quickly.

"The bigger issue is more the overall business performance and where they go from here. By that, I mean there's not a lot they can do with match-day revenue," he said.

"It kind of tops out at £90m, and with inflation over the next couple of years, £100m. But it's very hard for them to do anything in terms of match-day revenue without major stadium building.

"That's not coming anytime soon. On broadcast, clearly it's dependent on two things. One being in Europe; well, they're not in Europe at the moment. So they need to qualify first.

"And then the second element is where you finish in the league. And that's worth broadly £3m a place.

"What they could do in 26-27 to move their revenue up, there's very little and certainly, to move their profit, very little they can do."

What has Todd Boehly said about Stamford Bridge plans?

The desire to redevelop Stamford Bridge, or move stadiums, has been no secret in West London, but very little has happened since the owner's previous comments.

Speaking in an interview back in 2025, Boehly said: "We have a big stadium development opportunity that we have to flesh out.

"That's where we either align or ultimately decide to go our different ways."

It doesn't seem like any agreements will be made in any upcoming seasons, especially if Alonso can't get things right on the pitch.
