Sources: Chelsea make Josh Acheampong transfer decision as centre-back signing lined up
Chelsea have no plans to sell rising star Josh Acheampong this summer despite their planned defensive overhaul, sources have told Football Insider.
The Blues want to sign a new centre-back, but have high hopes for the 20-year-old, who made 30 appearances in all competitions last season.
However, one senior centre-back is expected to depart Stamford Bridge in the coming months, with the club currently overloaded in this position.
Football Insider recently revealed that Axel Disasi is set to depart Chelsea after returning from his loan spell, but this will still leave eight centre-backs on the club’s books and there will be at least one more exit in addition to him.
Chelsea are also working on overhauling their full-back department this summer transfer window.
This comes amid reports that Manchester City are interested in Malo Gusto.
Can Josh Acheampong become a star at Chelsea?
Acheampong has no doubt emerged as one of Chelsea’s brightest stars in recent years.
The centre-back has shown significant quality for his age, which is shown in many of his stats throughout the 2025-26 campaign.
According to Fotmob on 24 June, he averaged 0.14 goals, 1.49 successful dribbles, 5.70 duels won, 1.22 fouls won, 1.49 interceptions and 1.49 tackles per 90 minutes in the Premier League, showcasing just how talented he is.
If these can be improved upon further, there is every chance that he can become a star at Chelsea and be one of the first names on the team sheet in the coming years.
However, it remains to be seen if he will be given more chances to shine under Xabi Alonso after making just eight starts in the top-flight last season.
What other business could Chelsea oversee this summer?
Football Insider exclusively revealed that Chelsea are keeping tabs on Florian Wirtz this summer transfer window.
Alonso is said to be a huge admirer of the Liverpool star, who has struggled since his move to Anfield last year.
However, a deal would depend on whether Enzo Fernandez departs Chelsea over the coming months.
The Argentina international has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid after he admitted that he could leave the Blues earlier this year.
Sources have suggested that Fernandez’s departure is the only thing that makes a move for Wirtz feasible, despite Liverpool being open to completing a deal if the price is right.
