Sources: Champions set sights on signing Leeds star McCalmont after Bielsa green light

Title-winning Cheltenham Town have set their sights on signing Leeds United rising star Alfie McCalmont this summer, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

This site revealed on 4th May that Marcelo Bielsa has made up his mind on the midfielder, going out on loan again next season.

The Argentine wants McCalmont to continue his development with a season at a League One side after an excellent campaign on loan at League Two club Oldham Athletic.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Cheltenham are keen on signing McCalmont after securing a place in League One next season.

The Gloucestershire outfit ended the League Two campaign proper with an 82-point tally that secured promotion and the division title.

Now, they are plotting to win the race for Northern Ireland international following his breakthrough campaign.

He has grabbed his opportunity at the Latics, starting 31 league matches among 41 appearances in all competitions.

McCalmont has got Leeds fans excited with his regular goalscoring, especially over the last two months.

He has scored eight times in the league alone this season as well as provided four assists.

Five of his goals have come since mid-March, including an outstanding long ranger in the recent 3-0 win over Harrogate Town.

He has now returned to parent club but it is expected he will head out again early in pre-season.

Bielsa believes the versatile midfielder’s development would be best served by a loan next season in England’s third tier, opening the door to Cheltenham and their new rivals.
