Whelan gutted by 'disappointing' Joe Gelhardt news at Leeds
Noel Whelan has insisted he is gutted Joe Gelhardt will miss out when Leeds United visit Burnley this weekend.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker admitted he was hoping the 19-year-old may get a taste of first-team football before the end of the season.
Marcelo Bielsa confirmed the promising attacker had picked up an injury blow that had ruled out for Saturday’s clash.
Gelhardt is yet to make his Premier League debut for Leeds since his move from Wigan last summer.
However, he featured as an unused substitute for eight games between February and April.
With the season winding down, Whelan revealed he had hoped to see Gelhardt get a taste of senior action before the final day.

“Another young player that has been doing well for the under-23s,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“You kind of want to see a little bit more, that little integration into the first team before the end of the season. I’m hoping we will do at some point but it’s disappointing that he’s not going to be there and fit for the Burnley game.
“It’s not just me, I think there’s lots of fans out there that are really excited by this young man. He’s exciting, he scores goals, he plays that little number 10 role very well.
“You think about players that could make an impact. Everyone’s really excited about Joe Gelhardt.”
Gelhardt scored 11 goals in 16 Premier League 2 appearances this season to help Leeds to the Division Two title.
He played 21 times for Wigan’s senior side last season before moving to Elland Road.
